l0v3's review of "Highway to Heaven: 'Codename: FREAK'"

Character Jeff played: Christopher Gunn
Starfish: 5/5

The plot in a nutshell: The entire series is about an angel who can't get into angel until he wins some more merits. So he teams up with an ex-cop and helps people. This episode is just one of the stories about him helping someone in need.

So basically the angel, whose name is "Jonathan Smith" finds someone in need at a college called Western State University. The person in need is a gifted twelve year old named Christopher Gun, who is given a scholarship for Computer Programming at the institute. Considering his age, he has trouble fitting in with the other students on campus, including his football playing roommate Danny. He considers dropping out, but a visit home makes him think otherwise. It turns out his father never went to college due to the expenses, and he feels nothing but pride that his son was able to go five years early. So Chris tries again, and ends up on the rush list of the hottest fraternity on campus. Failing, Chris loses hope again, until one of Dannys friends, the varsity manager of the football team, offers to get him membership to the fraternity. The catch is, Chris has to get the test answers for Danny's next test, or Danny will lose the privilege to play football. Normally, Chris is a down to earth, sweet and sensible kid. But surprisingly, Chris agrees - and deliberately gets the answers to the wrong test.

Review: It's a pretty old TV show from the 80s. To tell you the truth, I've never really heard of this show. I thought the story was touching and heart warming. Keep in mind, I'm not reviewing the entire episode; I'm only reviewing Jeff's work in it. Hooray for biased opinions! *giggles*

Jeff's work in this is quite different than his modern work, something I was pleasantly surprised by. If you actually take a moment to stop squealing incoherently over Jeff's hotness (a difficult task indeed) and focus on Jeff's acting, you'll pretty much notice this. When Jeff acts, he's pretty much echoing his own personality. He's edgy, spontaneous and bold. In this show, Jeff is of course younger, but somehow I felt a maturity in his acting in this show. He seems fresh, sincere, and natural. Opposite to his current work, where when you see him, your head screams, "JEFF!", his acting in this made you believe he was Chris, and not the Jeff we know and love. I thought that was a refreshing change, and it would be very interesting if Jeff did this more recently, and tried pulling his dramatic side more often. I'd say Jeff did a really good job in this, and it's one of his finest works.

Fan girl corner: I'm happy to say he's just as cute now as he was then. The whole time, I wanted to jump into the show and pinch his cheeks! You can also see the uprising of the irresistible charm Jeff has now. Just a random insight, but it's kinda noticeable that he has a slight lisp in his voice here, which makes him even more huggable. As well, there's this one scene where he's trying out for the fraternity, and the frat boys make him strip to his boxers, cover his head in shaving cream and hose him down with icy water. Now, if Jeff could do that in the present *nosebleeds all over her keyboard*

L0v3's favourite scene: Mark, the varsity football manager, calls Danny from his homework so they can hang out. The moment they both leave, Chris gives a sad sigh, and quotes, "No, it's ok, I really have too much work." Chris is left alone in his dorm room to study.
